Leaderr approved Metallic Epoxy Flooring South Africa - flooring installers spreading a grey epoxy floor coating with a squeegee and spiked roller in an open-plan office, with Table Mountain visible through the windows

Metallic epoxy flooring South Africa: a decorative finish where metallic pigments are worked through the resin to create a marbled, pearl or lava-like effect. Every floor is hand-worked, so no two look the same.

How the Effect Is Made

  • A primer and a coloured base coat go down first.
  • The metallic coat is poured and moved with rollers, trowels or brushes.
  • Some installers use solvent sprays or blowers to create cells and veining.
  • A clear topcoat protects the effect and sets the sheen.

Expect Variation

Metallic floors depend on the installer's hand and on conditions on the day. Colour, movement and depth will differ from photos and from sample boards. Lighting also changes the look from morning to night.

Samples Before You Commit

  • Ask for a sample board in your chosen colours, and look at it in the room's own light.
  • Ask for photos of the contractor's own completed metallic floors, not supplier images.
  • Agree in writing what variation is acceptable before work starts.

Where Metallic Floors Work

Preparation

  • Metallic finishes show every dip and ridge underneath, so the base must be flat and smooth.
  • Uneven floors may need a levelling screed or a self levelling epoxy base first.
  • Moisture testing matters, because bubbles show clearly in a metallic finish.

Prices JUST UPDATED. Ballpark figures per m² for supply and installation, taken from rates published by South African flooring contractors and cost guides and rounded. They are not our prices or quotations, and no contractor is bound by them. Most sources do not say whether VAT or preparation is included, so confirm both on every quote.

Curing

Many standard epoxy systems take light foot traffic after about 24 hours, vehicles or heavy loads after about 5 to 7 days, and reach full chemical resistance after about 7 days at around 20°C. Cold weather slows curing, and fast-cure systems are quicker. Ask the contractor for the times printed on the product data sheet for the exact system they quote. Keep dust out while it cures; anything that lands in the wet coat stays there.

Cleaning and Care

  • Dust-mop often. Grit dulls gloss and shows on dark colours.
  • Use a pH-neutral cleaner, not abrasive pads.
  • Use felt pads and entrance mats.
  • A polyurethane topcoat can be refreshed when it wears, without redoing the effect.

Metallic Epoxy Flooring South Africa FAQs

Will my floor look like the photos?

Not exactly. Metallic floors are hand-worked and vary with each pour. A sample board in your colours gives a better guide than photos.

Does a metallic floor scratch?

Gloss finishes show fine scratches. A polyurethane topcoat and a satin sheen help.

Can a metallic finish go over tiles?

Grout lines and tile edges tend to show through. Most contractors remove tiles or level the floor first.

Is metallic epoxy slippery?

Gloss can be slippery when wet. A fine anti-slip additive in the topcoat adds grip with little change to the look.

Can I choose my own colours?

Usually, from the contractor's pigment range. Ask for samples of the exact mix.
