How Texture Is Added

  • Fine additive. Polymer beads or fine grit mixed into the topcoat. Mild grip, easy to clean.
  • Broadcast aggregate. Quartz or aluminium oxide scattered into the wet coat, then sealed. Strong grip.
  • Flake finish. Flakes under fewer topcoats give moderate texture.
  • Textured roller finish. An orange-peel texture rolled into the topcoat.

Match the Texture to the Conditions

ConditionTypical approach
Dry indoor areasFine additive or none
Occasionally wet: entrances, bathroomsFine to medium grit
Often wet or oily: kitchens, wash bays, workshopsMedium to coarse broadcast aggregate
Ramps and slopesCoarse aggregate
Hot washdowns, food processingTextured polyurethane cement rather than epoxy
OutdoorsA UV-stable topcoat or another resin, as epoxy yellows

Grip Versus Cleaning

  • More texture means more grip, but it holds more dirt and is harder to mop.
  • Very rough finishes need a deck brush or scrubber-dryer, not a mop.
  • Texture wears down in busy lanes. Plan to recoat before it smooths over.
  • Different zones can have different textures: coarse at the wash bay, finer in the walkway.

Testing and Specification

Ask whether the system has been slip tested, for example with a pendulum test, and what the wet result was. For workplaces, match the finish to your health and safety assessment.

Preparation and Installation

  1. Grind and repair the concrete.
  2. Prime and apply the body coat.
  3. Broadcast aggregate or add grit to the coat.
  4. Remove loose aggregate once cured.
  5. Seal with a topcoat; the number of coats sets the final texture.

Prices JUST UPDATED. Ballpark figures per m² for supply and installation, taken from rates published by South African flooring contractors and cost guides and rounded. They are not our prices or quotations, and no contractor is bound by them. Most sources do not say whether VAT or preparation is included, so confirm both on every quote.

Curing

Many standard epoxy systems take light foot traffic after about 24 hours, vehicles or heavy loads after about 5 to 7 days, and reach full chemical resistance after about 7 days at around 20°C. Cold weather slows curing, and fast-cure systems are quicker. Ask the contractor for the times printed on the product data sheet for the exact system they quote.

Cleaning and Care

  • Scrub with a stiff brush or scrubber-dryer and a degreaser approved for the coating.
  • Rinse well; detergent residue makes any floor more slippery.
  • Check grip in busy lanes and recoat when it wears.

Non Slip Epoxy Flooring South Africa FAQs

Is non slip epoxy completely slip-proof?

No floor is. Texture reduces the risk, but water, oil, footwear and cleaning all affect grip.

Will a non slip floor be hard to clean?

Coarser textures hold more dirt. They clean well with a stiff brush or scrubber, not a mop.

Can grit be added to an existing epoxy floor?

Often, by sanding the old topcoat and applying a new textured topcoat, if the existing coating is sound.

Which grit is best?

Fine grit for dry or occasionally wet areas, coarser aggregate for constant water, oil and slopes.

Does the texture wear off?

Yes, slowly in busy areas. Recoating the textured topcoat restores grip.
